Rosacea

Acne Rosacea

The Facts

Rosacea is a condition in which the face flushes (blushes) and stays flushed for a long time. Without treatment, the features of rosacea can eventually become permanent, disfiguring the face.

Rosacea usually comes on in middle age, but it can affect young adults. Women get the disease slightly more often than men.

Causes

It is not known what causes rosacea, but it's most common in people with pale complexions who flush easily. Foods or conditions that cause flushing can worsen rosacea. The fact that antibiotics can control the symptoms might suggest that bacteria are involved, but to date this has not been proven.

Flushing for any reason is liable to bring on an attack of redness and pimples. Even people who are being treated for rosacea can relapse if they flush. The following triggers can set off flushing:

  • alcohol
  • embarrassment
  • extreme heat or cold
  • hot drinks
  • menopause
  • some medicines
  • spicy foods
  • stress
  • sunlight
  • vigorous exercise
